Agriculture Minister Floyd Green has disclosed that strategic plans are being devised to provide farmers with access to water this year in order to increase crop production.
He said this is in response to the extended dry period experienced last year, which affected several crops,
with the lack of water and severe heat causing a shortage of some fruits and vegetables.
That experience has driven the ministry to approach the problem "strategically" this year, the minister said.
"So we're going to be doing more rain water harvesting ponds; we're going to be expanding our irrigation systems; we're going to be purchasing at least two new water trucks, so we can get to them and look where we can commission new wells," he explained.
The ministry will also continue its use of renewable energy to reduce the cost of producing water, he said.
Mr Green also promised that there will be greater efforts made to effectively combat praedial larceny.
