Fewer Jamaicans abandoning farm work programme overseas - Charles

Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr. says there has been significant reduction in the number of people abandoning the government's farm work programme while overseas.

It was revealed last year that the number of workers running off was on the increase.

The problem was most prevalent among new recruits for whom the programme did not meet their expectations.

The ministry said some unruly farm workers were tainting the prospects of recruits.

According to Minister Charles, the ministry has employed a number of strategies to tackle mistreatment while abroad.

He has further cautioned participants to be mindful of their conduct while overseas.

"We have instituted a lot of things. We have seen big improvements, a lessening in terms of the complaints. But we still send that message. All who are going now, must understand, your conduct, your behaviour is going to impact those that can come behind you. It's going to either open or close the door. So remember that they are ambassadors for the country," he advised.

He said the ministry has increased liaison officers, opened new offices and set up a "more robust" orientation programme, all of which have helped to improve the farm work programme and expand opportunities for Jamaicans.

Minister Charles was a guest Wednesday morning on TVJ's Smile Jamaica.
