Firefighters have brought the blaze at the Tobolski disposal site in Brown's Town, St. Ann under control.
Personnel from the Brown's Town and St. Ann's Bay stations responded to the fire sometime after 8 o'clock Tuesday morning.
Residents reported seeing plumes of black smoke being emitted from the dump from around 7:30.
Stewart Beckford, Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, says roughly 25 per cent of the dump was on fire but the firefighters have managed to contain most of the blaze.
"What was burning was mostly old cars and tyres. We got into operation and we were able to bring the fire under control and extinguish the blaze. However, there is still level of smouldering taking place there, and the dump supervisor has committed to use covering material to cover, so that the smoke nuisance can be reduced. So we anticipate that over the next few hours the level of smoke emitting from the site should be significantly reduced," he said.
