Stewart Beckford, Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade
With fireworks expected to light up the sky to celebrate the new year, the Jamaica Fire Brigade is reminding Jamaicans that it is illegal to set off fireworks without a permit.
Commissioner Stewart Beckford says Jamaicans hosting a show for fireworks must first obtain a permit from the Jamaica Fire Brigade.
He says the Brigade will also provide people with the necessary safety instructions to ensure they conduct their fireworks in a safe manner.
"Generally, fireworks, when they are conducted in Jamaica, tend to be safe. Yes, we have had the occasional incident of something going wrong, but in the main, they tend to conduct them in a manner that will not necessarily cause fire. But those are the ones we can monitor because we are aware of them because an application would have been made to us and we would have granted them a permit. And so we would have been able to sit with the persons who are going to be carrying out those activities and walk them through the safety procedures to be observed," he explained.
Commissioner Beckford was a guest Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106FM.
