Fire destroyed another 300 acres of sugar cane at two farms in St. Thomas on Monday morning.

Losses have been estimated at $36 million.

Nicholas Jones, Manager of Fred M. Jones Estates, expressed concern about the frequency of the fires, noting that it "is just continuation of what took place two weeks ago" where more than a thousand acres of cane were destroyed.

"I don't know who is doing what about the situation but I think that whatever was done was handled improperly and it needs to be addressed. People need to come back in and assess what went wrong and take the appropriate action," he said.

Fire was seen coming from one of the farms about 10:30.

A unit from the Morant Bay Fire Department responded.

Fire personnel were unable to extinguish the blaze at the other section as the area was inaccessible.
