Fire forces closure of Airy Castle Primary in St. Thomas

Classes at Airy Castle Primary School in St. Thomas were suspended on Monday afternoon following a fire at the institution.

Shortly before noon, the fire broke out in the building which houses the computer lab, library, tuck shop and canteen.

The building was destroyed.

No one was injured.

Dawn Graham, principal of the school, told RJR News that classes will remain suspended on Tuesday to facilitate an inspection by the Ministry of Education.

Additionally, she said the school would have had a challenge feeding the students, hence the decision to suspend classes.

"[O]ur tuck shop is gone, our canteen area is gone, so we would not be able to provide for them... We would not be able to take care of the children tomorrow, so we decided that they would remain home until further notice," she said.

The Jamaica Public Service Company was called after fire was seen coming from a utility pole.
