Prime Minister Andrew Holness is urging people who will be staying at emergency shelters as Hurricane Beryl passes over the island to adhere to any established codes of conduct.
"There are rules around how you should conduct yourself in the shelter and I am expecting that all Jamaicans who are using the shelters will understand that," Mr. Holness said.
He urged Jamaicans using these facilities to "ensure that we put our best foot forward in terms of how we relate to each other, in terms of how we access supplies and how we actually use the shelter for safety".
Manager of Weather Services at the Met Office, Rohan Brown, told Radio Jamaica News that the hurricane will hit Jamaica as a strong Category 4 system around midday.
It is expected to move quickly across the eastern coast of Jamaica.
The outter bands are already affecting the eastern section of Jamaica.
As the day progresses, there will be increasing rainfall, thunderstorms and hurricane force winds and dangerous storm surges.
