The Jamaican Cabinet has approved the merger of the Forensic Science Laboratory and the Legal Medicine Unit. The new entity will be referred to as the Institute of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine.
The merging of the entities was one of the recommendations made in the Master Rationalisation Plan for the Public Sector.
The Forensic Science Lab is responsible for conducting forensic examinations and analyses on evidence submitted by the police and other agencies, while the Legal Medicine Unit has responsibility for conducting medico-legal post-mortems. The Unit will now function as the Department of Pathology in the new entity.
Cabinet also approved the placement of the Line Budget and reporting relationship of the new entity directly under the Ministry of National Security.
The entities, which were functionally merged in June 2012, will be assessed to determine whether the Institute will become a Department or Executive Agency
The Institute will also provide services to the private sector, locally and regionally, on an economic cost recovery basis.
