Former footballer arrested for assault

Walter Boyd, former Reggae Boy, is now in custody.

Mr. Boyd, who is accused of using a piece of brick to hit a woman in the face in 2004, was denied bail when he appeared before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Tuesday morning.

The footballer was arrested on the weekend by the St. Andrew Central Police.

Senior Magistrate Georgiana Fraser refused bail after the court was told that the complainant has been receiving death threats since Mr. Boyd's arrest.

Domestic dispute

It was reported that in May 2004, the former football star and the woman, who both lived in Nannyville Gardens, St. Andrew, had a dispute.

During the dispute he reportedly used a piece of brick to smash the woman's face.

The victim suffered a broken eye socket and doctors have been performing surgeries since then to save one of her eyes.

The investigator told the court that a warrant was issued in 2004 for Mr. Boyd's arrest but it was never served because the police were told he had left the community.

He said the cops went for him on the weekend after the victim filed a fresh complaint.

Threats

Ms Fraser was seriously considering granting bail following an application by his attorney Stewart Stephenson, but changed her stance after she was informed that the victim is being threatened.

Mr. Boyd, who is charged with the offence of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, was remanded until March 2.
