Alvira Campbell, the former Ministry of Labour employee who pleaded guilty to swindling close to $1 million from the Ministry, has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for 24 months.
Campbell was also fined a total of $400,000 on four counts of larceny as a servant.
She will have to serve a 12-month sentence if the fine is not paid.
Campbell had pleaded guilty to stealing the money to cover tuition fees for herself and her son.
MOCA agents were alerted by the Ministry after a 2018 internal audit uncovered a number of irregularities within the Public Assistance Department, responsible for reviewing applications and disbursing aid under the Rehabilitation Programme.
The investigation revealed that between January 2014 and November 2017, Campbell exploited her position as an accounting clerk to illegally obtain a total of $807,500.
The funds were used to cover tuition fees for herself at the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean and for her son at the Mico University College.
A search of her residence led to the seizure of several items.
