Two men are dead following a freak boat accident Monday evening
at the Black River
Wharf in St. Elizabeth.
One of the men died after he fell from the vessel and became entangled in the engine's propellers.
He has been identified as Christopher Roxbourough.
A man who tried to rescue him drowned.
Both men are from Westmoreland.
Just before seven o'clock Mr. Roxbourough was pouring oil from a tank when he fell overboard and was sucked in by the boat's engine.
Tacrish Gardener, 41, who went to his rescue encountered difficulties and drowned.
According to an alleged eyewitness, Mr. Gardener tried to save his friend despite warnings from onlookers not to go into the water.
"He was stretching over to pull a five gallon bottle onto the wharf when he flipped over and went down headlong between the boat and the wharf,"
"A mechanic was working on the boat and the engine stalled so it looked like the engine sucked him in,"
"His friend came and said he was going to dive for him and he went down and didn't come back up," said an alleged eyewitness.
It is reported that the two men were preparing to go fishing when the accident occurred.
