Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke says the government is continuing to monitor the fuel crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and there could be further support for Jamaicans reeling from the impact.
The Jamaican Government has committed to paying 20 per cent of the electricity costs for some Jamaicans from this month until August.
This is based on the fact that electricity bills have gone up significantly as a result of the war.
In an address to the nation Sunday evening, Dr. Clarke suggested there could be further help for consumers, depending on the situation.
Last month Michel Gantois, President & CEO of the Jamaica Public Service Company, warned that Jamaica's supplies of oil could be cut off if Europe decides to suspend gas imports from Russia, as oil and gas sellers could divert supplies to richer markets to the detriment of smaller ones like Jamaica.
He encouraged the government and local fuel suppliers to identify alternative sources.
Just last week the European Union announced it will phase out Russian supply of crude oil within six months and refined products by the end of the year.
