Low-income workers in the Cayman Islands have reacted with shock and disappointment to yesterday's announcement by the government that it would not be following the recommendations of an expert committee to increase the minimum wage from 6 dollars an hour.
The Minimum Wage Advisory Committee said the proposed increase to $8.75 would have benefited more than 10,000 people, including over 2,000 Caymanians.
The government did not release the report, which was provided to Cabinet in October 2023, until March this year.
Pressed for more information in Parliament yesterday, Labour Minister Dwayne Seymour indicated that the administration had decided not to proceed with the increase at this time.
Mr Seymour said more government funds would be directed to another review by a new committee, which would be specifically asked to investigate the possibility of a sector-specific minimum wage.
