Guyana begins accepting skilled third-country nationals from US

Guyana says it has reached an agreement with the United States to temporarily accept a limited number of vetted, skilled and non-criminal third-country nationals being relocated from the United States.

The Guyana government says about half a dozen people have already arrived under the arrangement.

The individuals will remain in Guyana while their immigration status is determined by US authorities.

The government says the arrangement is temporary and does not amount to permanent resettlement.

Under the initial 12-month agreement, Guyana could accept up to 12 people each month, although the number will not roll over from one month to the next.

Guyana says it retains full discretion to review and reject any individual proposed for relocation, while the United States will cover the full cost of the process through the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The government says it will not bear the financial cost of the programme.

Guyana says the arrangement is part of its broader cooperation with the United States in areas including energy, trade, investment, security and diplomacy.
