Guyana rejects Venezuela's latest plan to annex Essequibo

The government of Guyana says it will not countenance the seizure, annexation or occupation of any part of its territory by Venezuela.

The latest salvo comes after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro promulgated the law for the Defense of Guayana Esequiba.

Guyana Esequiba is how Venezuela describes the county of Essequibo.

Guyana says the actions by the Venezuelan government contradict the letter and spirit of the Joint Declaration of Argyle for Dialogue and Peace that was agreed between the two countries in St. Vincent and the Grenadines last December.

It adds that it is unfortunate that the commitment made at Argyle for the pursuance of good neighbourliness, peaceful coexistence, and the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean is now being threatened by President Maduro.
