Guyana's government says it will hold talks with various financial institutions to assist persons affected by the floods caused by heavy rains over the past few days.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who has been visiting some of the flooded areas, said his administration will be approaching financial institutions and creditors as part of the long-term support for farmers affected by the countrywide flooding.
The government has already announced that it will seek approval for a $10 billion supplementary budget when the National Assembly meets later on Thursday.
Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said the supplementary financing will be used to repair infrastructure, specifically roads and bridges that have been damaged by the flooding.
He said support will also be given to farmers, miners and families whose livelihoods were destroyed by the natural disaster.
President Ali said the Civil Defence Commission has elevated the scale of the disaster to level two, given the number of regions affected and the losses suffered.
