Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says the government has engaged in a strategic effort to ensure efficient upgrades are undertaken at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).

Dr. Tufton says such a move will avoid a repeat of maintenance neglect and poor planning which resulted in major issues at Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James. The 50-year-old building has been plagued with infrastructural challenges while supporting healthcare emergencies across western parishes.

Dr. Tufton says the government must swiftly move to address the issues affecting KPH given the ageing infrastructure and the growing population served by the facility.

"The facility, which opened its door in 1776 and which currently boasts 484 beds, has been plagued by challenges due to the age of the plant and poor maintenance. I am happy to announce that we have now identified lands for lease to purchase and have commenced plans for a new KPH. Mr. Speaker, a land use survey report was prepared on the properties around KPH, inclusive of the 35 parcels identified and the National Land Agency is coordinating
the compulsory acquisition of the required lands," he disclosed.

The minister, who was delivering his sectoral debate presentation in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, said the government's move is based on the lessons learned from Cornwall Regional.

The government has been working to upgrade and expand public health facilities across the island.
