Guyana urges sustainable development among states in Amazon region

Prime Minister of Guyana Mark Phillips has called on states within the Amazon region to practice sustainable development.

Mr. Phillips said countries in the region must find creative ways to tackle  challenges but contended that environmental protection must not "translate to the absence of development" in the respective countries.

He made the remarks at the opening of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization in Belem, Brazil.

Observers say his statement to the conference underlines Guyana's intention to rapidly pursue oil extraction and other developments that could have an impact on the environment.
