The Guyana government Friday said that any legal proceedings against the police will be "stoutly defended" as it responded to a threat by attorneys representing a US-based social media activist following a search carried out at her family's residence there.
Lawyers representing the activist, Melissa "Melly Mel" Atwell, her mother and grandmother, had alleged that the police carried out an "unconstitutional search" of their Guyana residence earlier this week in retaliation for her criticism of the government.
The lawyers said their clients have requested factual and legal basis for the search in writing.
They said that earlier this week the police searched the home of Debbie Atwell, 56, and during that exercise, they saw a black plastic bag, with a zip-lock bag containing 27 grammes in marijuana in a nearby alleyway.
Atwell's lawyers said in light of that matter they expect a response stating a justification for the search within 48 hours of receiving the letter dated September 19, or legal action would be taken.
But in a letter dated September 20th, 2024 and signed by Ronetta Sargent, the principal legal advisor in the Attorney General Chambers, the lawyers were informed that the members of the Guyana Police Force who executed the search warrant on September 17, did so "in scrupulous compliance with the laws and the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana".
