The Manchester police are throwing their support behind the ongoing peace ambassadors programme in schools.

The police say, with 72 per cent of homicides in the parish attributed to domestic disputes, the initiative is a welcomed addition to the other measures being used to cauterize the problem.

The programme is the brainchild of Custos of Manchester, Garfield Green.

Acting Superintendent Carey Duncan, head of the Manchester police, says the programme promotes a positive and supportive learning environment that spills over into the wider community.

He added that it is likely to improve academic performance since students who feel safe and supported tend to perform better, while it should also reduce the likelihood of bullying, fights and other forms of violence.

"Peace education encourages students to consider different perspectives, promoting empathy and understanding. It also augurs for better mental health [as] peaceful schools can help reduce stress, anxiety and other mental health issues," the senior cop suggested.
