Guyana's coalition government MPs with dual citizenship have all resigned from Parliament

Guyana's president, David Granger, has received and accepted the resignation of all coalition Members of Parliament who are holders of dual citizenship.

In a brief statement Tuesday morning, the government said these members will not be returning to parliament when it reconvenes next week Thursday.

The announcement came days after Minister of State Joseph Harmon, who himself holds US citizenship, announced that all government MPs would be present when the House reconvenes as Cabinet had not made a decision on those members with dual citizenship.

The other government MPs with dual citizenship are Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge, Minister of Public Service Dr Rupert Roopnaraine and Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin, who all hold British citizenship.

Opposition

In response, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has declared that opposition legislators with dual citizenship will not tender their resignation but will stay away from sittings of  the National Assembly.

The Court of Appeal recently overturned a High Court decision that a December 21, 2018 motion of  no-confidence was valid.

However, the Court of  Appeal upheld the High Court's ruling that legislators who are dual citizens are not qualified to be Members of  Parliament, in keeping with  Guyana Constitution.
