Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has called Donald Trump to congratulate the Republican leader on his US presidential election win.
A senior aide said Harris also discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans.
Meanwhile, Ms. Harris told supporters gathered at Howard University on Wednesday afternoon that the Democratic Party must accept the results of the presidential election.
She did not concede on election night, despite it becoming clear by the early hours of Wednesday that her Republican rival had secured enough votes in key swing states to win.
In her first speech since Donald Trump's decisive victory, the Vice President, who said she has conceded defeat to the president-elect, charged an energised and emotional crowd to roll up their sleeves.
She said people may "feel like America is entering a dark time", but added that she hoped "that is not the case".
Of the seven crucial swing states, Mr. Trump has won North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and is ahead in Nevada and Arizona.
Republicans have also taken the Senate back from the Democrats.
President Joe Biden has also called President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his election victory and to invite him to the White House to discuss the transition.
Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States, an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.
