Health Ministry outlines projects to be undertaken at Cornwall Regional Hospital

The Ministry of Health has outlined activities to be undertaken at Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay in the next two weeks, after the relocation of most of the patients.

Chief  Medical Officer Dr Winston De La Haye says the process will require significant effort on several levels. The next phase involves infrastructure design and work.

“It’s multiple projects we are looking at, We are looking at designing a ventilation system and this will go to tender to be built and then there is installation – so it’s not a tomorrow thing,” he said.

The Ministry has been transferring most of  the hospital's critical services after staff and patients began to be affected by extremely poor air quality at the institution.

A probe by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has concluded that mold is the main cause of  the problem.

Meanwhile, De La Haye has indicated that an important aspect of  medical training will soon be again facilitated at Cornwall Regional.

“I can safely say that within two or so weeks we should be at a point where we can breath a sigh of relief. A very important component – that is the teaching of students, and for obvious reasons that has been temporary discontinued, but we really hope that by the end of April, we can invite the University of the West Indies personnel to come and take a look,” he said.
