Holness launches taskforce to analyse CXC results

Opposition Leader Andrew Holness, has revealed that he will be putting together a taskforce to analyze Jamaica's results in this year's Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) examinations, and make recommendations.

In a letter to Education Minister Ronald Thwaites today, Mr. Holness requested the official results of the examinations.

He outlined, that the request was made in light of concerns pertaining to the troubling decline in the percentage of students passing Mathematics and English Language.

Mr. Holness said, the data is being sought, in the interest of transparency and the continued development of the country's education system.

In the meantime, the Caribbean Examinations Council while not being able to provide an overall reason for this year's poor performance of candidates  in both the Math and English Language CSEC examinations today pointed out areas where candidates fell off significantly.

According to Pro registrar at CXC, Glenroy Cummberbatch, although no changes were made to the English A syllabus students had problems with several areas.

He said these include summary writing and comprehension.

Meanwhile in Mathematics problems were seen with the responses of candidates to questions dealing with Range, perimeter and profit and loss.

Mr Cumberbatch was quick to point out that sound preparation and marking were done in the drafting and assessment of the exam.

He added that this year saw a significant increase in candidates although not able to give concrete data to back up his claim he said this may be one of the contributing factor to the low number of passes.
