National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang has credited the record seizure of illegal firearms and ammunition so far this year to greater police-civilian collaboration.

Dr Chang, addressing the House of Representatives on Tuesday, said there has been an increase of more than 80 per cent in the number of illegal guns seized this year over last year.

He revealed that up to June 21, the authorities had seized 738 firearms, "marking an 81 per cent increase over the corresponding period in 2024."

He also disclosed that 39,776 rounds of ammunition have been recovered so far this year, "which is about seven times the number recovered for 2024."

"What is represents is an increasing level of trust by the community in the police," he asserted.

The Minister noted that news coverage has now shifted significantly to the numbers of firearms being recovered in "targeted operations."

He said the fact that in many instances nobody is arrested in connection with these firearm recoveries and no reward is requested for the information provided is indicative of that growing trust between civilians and the police, "many of them young officers from the community, or from neighbouring communities (who) they recognise and trust,  and provide them with the information to find the firearms that are killing Jamaicans."
