IMF impressed by Jamaica's programme implementation

The Jamaican Government has been commended by Alejandro Warner, the International Monetary Fund's Western Hemisphere Director, for maintaining political support and civility in the implementation of the current programme, established in concert with the Fund.

The IMF Director who met with Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller on Thursday, said the government's stance was admirable, despite the complexities of the programme and the social challenges that the country faces.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said Mrs. SimpsonMiller assured the IMF Director that the Government was fully committed to the programme in the interest of the people.

She reportedly told Mr. Warner that the Cabinet has given Finance Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips its support to ensure that the country is successful in meeting the targets set by the IMF.

Mr. Warner observed that the programme appeared to be on the right track but stressed that as it progresses the issue of growth and poverty alleviation should take centre stage in the country’s economic policy.

In response, the Prime Minister said that the Government is seeking to bolster the foundation of the programme by looking at opportunities for growth and job creation.

She said some initiatives are already underway to support this objective, including tax reform, public sector modernization and encouraging public/private partnerships.
