The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it is probing the fatal shooting of 20 people by members of the security forces since the start of the year.
The latest incident occurred Thursday morning at the Emirates Plaza on Ardenne Road in St. Andrew.
Jermaine Richards, a 40-year-old resident of Fleet Street in Kingston and an employee of Ribbiz Ultra Lounge, was shot and killed by an off-duty policeman in the parking lot of the plaza.
Radio Jamaica News was informed that sometime after 4 a.m., a member of the management team of the nightclub had a dispute with an employee and requested that the policeman intervene.
It's reported that the Police Corporal was dealing with the dispute when Mr. Richards reportedly intervened in an aggressive manner.
This led to a confrontation between the two.
It's alleged that Mr. Richards was fatally shot when he pulled a knife on the policeman.
INDECOM is appealing for people who witnessed the shooting to come forward.
Residents of Mr. Richards' community staged a protest Thursday demanding a thorough investigation by INDECOM.
Last year, thirteen people were fatally shot by members of the Security Forces during the month of January, while in 2023 there were nine such incidents for the similar period.
