INDECOM wants police to make greater use of body-worn cameras

INDECOM Commissioner Hugh Faulkner
By Clinton McGregor

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is hoping for greater cooperation this year from the Police High Command for members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force to wear body-worn cameras while on duty.

According to INDECOM Commissioner Hugh Faulkner, this will assist the agency in investigating complaints of alleged abuse and excessive use of force by members of the security forces.

"Three out of the last four calendar years have recorded more than 1,000 complaints in each year against the security forces. In our consultation with law enforcement bodies, we will further our call for widespread use of body-worn cameras. This, we believe, inures to the advancement of justice, both for the officers and for the public," Mr. Faulkner insisted.

Some 58 cases are before the courts involving members of the security forces accused of murder and other crimes.
