The administration of Seaforth High School in St. Thomas is now assessing the damage caused by a fire to a section of the institution this morning.
The fire that caused extensive damage to a classroom block which housed the Art Department, is expected to affect students due to sit external examinations next week.
Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade Emelio Ebanks says the cause of the fire that started shortly after 5:00am, is not yet known.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for St Thomas Western James Robertson says he has been in contact with Minister with responsibility for the Education Ministry, Karl Samuda, to determine how best to assist the affected students, as he believes the classroom block will have to be demolished.
And investigations are continuing to determine whether or not an electrical short circuit led to the fire.
Robertson says residents at the scene of the fire as well school officials reported that a problem had been observed. There is now no electricity at the school.
