JA & Haiti at great risk for a tsunami

Concerns are again being raised about Jamaica's vulnerability to tsunamis.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that a recent United States study has revealed that Jamaica and Haiti are at a greater tsunami risk than previously thought.

The findings are outlined in a new study of tsunamis generated during the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in January.

The study, published online on Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience, raises troubling questions about the possibility of high death tolls should Jamaica be hit by a large earthquake.

The study noted that this earthquake could cause populated coastal areas to collapse into the Caribbean Sea and trigger tsunamis that would rebound back to shore.
