Jamaica remains under Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica say a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch continue for Jamaica, even as reconnaissance aircraft data indicate that Tropical Storm Melissa could be reforming across the central Caribbean Sea.

At 10 a.m., the centre of Tropical Storm Melissa was located about 260 km or 162 miles south southeast of Morant Point, or 345 km or 215 miles southeast of Kingston.

Melissa is expected to drift slowly toward the northeast and then north later on Friday and Friday night.

The projection is for rainfall amounts from the storm of up to 350 millimetres or 14 inches over eastern parishes through the weekend, possibly causing widespread flooding and landslides.

This will gradually spread westward across the country next week.

The centre of the storm is expected to begin drifting westward on Saturday and continue through Monday bringing it just south of Jamaica early next week.
