Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture is moving to retrieve pre-colonial indigenous sculptures being housed at the British Museum in the United Kingdom.
The Taino wooden sculptures are known as the 'Boinayel figures' and 'Birdman'.
Culture Minister Olivia Grange says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated the process of engaging the British Government to retrieve the artifacts.
She noted that in 1981 the British High Commission in Jamaica identified 137 objects from Jamaica that were being housed at the British Museum.
According to information provided by the Institute of Jamaica, the Taino sculptures were removed from a cave in Carpenter's Mountain in a section of the parish of Vere, now known as Manchester, during the 18th century.
They were formally entered into the British Museum's collection in 1977.
