The Ministry of Health has confirmed that Jamaica will begin its implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday.
The plane carrying 50,000 AstraZeneca vaccines, donated by India, is scheduled to land about Monday afternoon at Norman Manley International Airport.
It will be the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines to arrive in Jamaica.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor McKenzie said essential workers, beginning with health care professionals, will be inoculated starting on March 10. She said this will ensure that "our health system at least will hold up in terms of our human resources."
Members of the security forces as well as persons in the 60 and older age group will also be targeted in the first phase of the vaccination programme.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness will host a media briefing at 5 o'clock Monday afternoon regarding the arrival of the vaccines as well as in light of the increase in COVID-19 cases.
