Jamaican appointed judge in Florida's Supreme Court

A Jamaican has been appointed a judge in Florida's Supreme Court.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Renatha Francis, who is currently a judge for the Florida 15th Circuit Court.

She previously served on the Florida 11th Circuit Court and the Miami-Dade County Court.

The governor said Ms Francis is the first person from the Caribbean to be appointed to Florida's Supreme Court.

Judge Francis said she was raised in Jamaica by a single mother who never finished high school and who was the daughter of a farmer.

Judge Francis, who is currently on maternity leave, will take up her appointment in September.
