An Orange County jury in Orlando, Florida has convicted a Jamaican man on two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, stemming from a violent encounter that left a fellow Jamaican woman and her daughter dead.
Doujon Griffiths from Glendevon, St. James, fatally shot 20-year-old Massania Malcolm, who was from the same community, and left her one-year-old daughter, Jordania, to die inside a hot vehicle in 2021.
Griffith, 26, was convicted on six counts, including first-degree murder with a firearm, first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder with a firearm and three counts of shooting at, within or into a building.
According to the State Attorney’s Office, Griffith shot Malcolm after first shooting her boyfriend, Jordane Reid, who survived the attack.
Investigators said Malcolm's one-year-old daughter was left inside a vehicle in an outdoor parking lot on Lake Ellenor Drive in Orlando. The child was found dead alongside her mother's body two days later. Investigators determined that the child died after being exposed to the extreme heat inside the vehicle.
Griffith and the couple reportedly knew each other before the killings. Investigators said Malcolm and Reid had taken Griffith into their home after he became homeless.
On the morning of September 7, 2021, the couple reportedly drove Griffith to a bus stop. Prosecutors said he shot at them during the trip, striking Reid multiple times and killing Malcolm. Reid was hospitalised for several months after the shooting and later provided investigators with details about the attacks.
The deliberation and the conviction on Thursday took about 20 minutes. The trial started Monday with jury selection.
Griffiths will be sentenced on November 16.
