Jamaican pleads guilty to drug charges in New Jersey

Jamaican Roger "Kirk" Folkes, who United States law enforcement authorities linked to a major international drug smuggling ring has pleaded guilty to drug charges.

Folkes pleaded guilty, on Monday, in a New Jersey court.

Folkes and his 26-year-old brother, Romeo Folkes, were charged with conspiracy to import cocaine into and export cocaine from the United States.

Both men were extradited last November, following a lengthy battle by Defense Attorney Tom Tavares-Finson, to prevent their extradition.

Folkes, 39, admitted that he and his brother hired drug couriers to travel to Jamaica and St. Lucia, where they hid cocaine in their luggage handrails.

The couriers would then fly the drugs to Great Britain with stops within the United States.

Folkes has been remanded without bail.

Romeo is currently awaiting trial.

Folkes' guilty plea carries a statutory mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, a maximum of life imprisonment, and fines of up to $10 million.

Another Jamaican, Mervin Frances, who was extradited from the United Kingdom in 2009, pleaded guilty, last year, to conspiracy to import and export cocaine.

He was sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
