Jamaicans in Houston, Texas, have so far not been significantly affected by the massive flooding caused by Tropical Storm Harvey.
The Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board for the Southern United States has been in contact with the network of Jamaicans in the area.
It's estimated that up to 75000 Jamaicans live in Houston.
“From what I have been told none of them have been directly affected especially in the area of Houston . In terms of damage or loss of life we haven’t heard of anything happening with Jamaicans…..there is no negative news concerning individuals from Jamaica,” said Member of the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board, Wayne Golding.
He said Jamaicans have been assisting rescue efforts amid conditions which the US National Weather Service has described as unprecedented:
Up to 2,000 people have been rescued from floods in and around Houston, as Tropical Storm Harvey continues to batter Texas with heavy rains.
The National Weather Service said there was a flash flood emergency across the Houston Metro area, with travel near impossible.
Many shelters have been opened, including in a convention centre.
