Jamaicans in the UK plan Independence celebrations

Jamaicans in the United Kingdom have planned major celebrations to mark the country's 47th year of independence from Britain.

The festivities will begin Saturday with a National Service of Praise and Thanksgiving in the British capital, at Trafalgar Square, led by Jamaica's High Commissioner Burchell Whiteman.

The Association of Jamaican UK Trust will also host an independence dinner and dance at the Grand Place in North London.

Over in Birmingham, the Association of Jamaican Nationals will be hosting a series of events to mark the occasion, between August 9 and 23.

An Independence concert and a fun day, where teams representing Jamaica and other Caribbean islands will compete, are part of the line-up of activities.

In a release, High Commissioner Whiteman said over the past 47 years, Jamaica has made its mark in various international organizations as well as in the Caribbean.
