Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is implementing a new system, which will see all adult Jamaicans having to file their income tax returns each year.
At present most Jamaicans who fall in the Pay as you earn (P.A.Y.E.) category are not required to file income tax returns.
But T.A.J. is currently establishing the first phase of a system similar to the United States where all Americans must file annual income tax returns. The department plans to take between three to four years before it can fully implement all the requisite changes needed for it to operate at first world standards.
But representatives from the department, who were guests at the RJR news forum, say the process has to start somewhere and eventually all adult Jamaicans will have to go through the rigors of filing their tax returns.
Meanwhile, the TAJ’s Deputy Commissioner General Rosalee Brown said the over four thousand audits conducted by the department revealed that there were several increasing areas of non-compliance.
Some P-A-Y-E contributors fell in this category as they have other sources of income.
“What this is intended to do is to target persons with multiple sources, I’m not talking about unearned interest along with a salary but trade, business or profession, said Commissioner General of the TAJ, Ainsley Powell.
