The Jamaica Agricultural Society has welcomed the recently approved amendments to the Praedial Larceny (Prevention) Act, which it hopes will thwart, in a meaningful way, the high incidence of agricultural theft.

On Friday the Senate approved tougher sanctions for criminals who often prey on farmers, leaving behind multi-million dollar losses.

The amendments will see much larger fines for agriculture related crimes.

JAS President Owen Dobson told Radio Jamaica News that the legislative changes, especially the increased fines, should ease the frustration of many  farmers who have been suffering at the hands of thieves.

During Friday's deliberation in the Senate, Leader of Government Business Senator Kamina Johnson Smith noted that the recently established Agricultural Protection Branch of the JCF is expected to strengthen efforts to reduce agricultural theft.

The JAS President is urging farmers not to remain silent, urging them to report these incidents.

He's also urging the government to swiftly implement the agricultural wardens programme.
