Jet ski owners, operators to show proof of ownership

The owners or operators of the jet skis which were seized in St. Ann on the weekend by customs officials, face the risk of losing the machines if they are unable to provide proper documentation.
Major Richard Reece, Commissioner of Customs, has outlined that the Customs Act places a burden on the owner of property suspected of being imported illegally, to prove that it was brought into the island legally.
Major Reece stated that where for example the illegal importer sold a jet ski to an unsuspecting buyer, his agency will assist in tracking down the origins of the machines.

“So we will also check our records, if they say that a particular individual imported it at a particular time, we can also check the records,” said Major Reece.

Dr. Wykeham McNeil, Minister of Tourism last month announced a six-month suspension of the importation of jet skis and personal water craft for commercial purposes.
It will facilitate a clampdown on illegal operators.
