JLP blames last PNP administration for rise in crime

The governing Jamaica Labour Party has blamed the rise in criminality on what it claims was the previous administration's defunding of the police.

The change of government took place six years ago.

The accusation came on Sunday from National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang.

Dr Chang, who is General Secretary of the JLP, made the claim while addressing party supporters at the St Andrew North Eastern divisional conference, at the Girl Guides headquarters.

He declared that insisted that the People's National Party, while in governing, gave power to criminals by failing to support the police.

According to him, the previous administration under-funded the security forces which resulted in criminal elements becoming emboldened.

Dr Chang contends that the State is now grappling with a generation of criminals who have been acting with impunity and it will take some time for a reversal of the effects of previous policies

He told JLP supporters that the Andrew Holness-led government has ensured that the country's crime fighters are equipped to challenge criminals and provide public safety.
