One of the Justices of the Peace who was reportedly charging for his service has resigned.

The Sunday Gleaner reported that JPs in several parishes have been acting against the law by charging fees and lying in letters of recommendation they write for complete strangers.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says he expects the other JPs identified as acting inappropriately to tender their resignations.

"So, whether you are in Clarendon, St. Catherine or Kingston and St. Andrew, if you know that you're acting inappropriately and have been found out and have been exposed in Sunday’s Gleaner newspaper, please report to your Custos, hand in your seal and your resignation. This is a noble vocation. It must not be abused," he insisted.

Mr. Chuck was speaking Thursday at the commissioning of 48 Justices of the Peace in St. James.
