The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has granted the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) an environmental permit to proceed with the construction and operation of the New Maggotty Hydroelectric Power Plant, in St. Elizabeth.
NEPA says the JPS has fulfilled its requirements including an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which revealed that the project would not have a negative effect on the environment.
The EIA's findings were presented to residents of Maggotty earlier this year.
JPS is now reviewing submissions from bidders who are interested in carrying out the engineering, procurement and construction work required for the power station.
Having received the environmental permit, JPS is preparing applications, to seek permits and approvals from the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, the National Works Agency and other relevant bodies, to facilitate the project.
The proposed new Maggotty Hydroelectric Power Plant will see a doubling of the output of electricity being generated from the use of the Black River.
The new hydropower plant will provide approximately 6.3 mega watts of electrical power to the national grid.
