JPS says power restored to 83% of customers

By Halshane Burke

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says it is hoping to restore power to 97 per cent of affected customers by the end of this week.

Providing an update on Monday afternoon, CEO of JPS Damian Obiglio said power has been restored to 83 per cent of customers who lost power during Hurricane Beryl.

He said there is a challenge to restoration efforts in Clarendon, St. Elizabeth and Manchester, the parishes worst affected by Beryl, due to a number of poles being in heavily vegetated areas, limiting access.

JPS said multiple teams have been deployed in efforts to restore supply, particularly in St. Elizabeth where close to 100 per cent of customers remain without power.

Mr. Obiglio noted that the company's system was built to withstand a category 3 hurricane, and not the intensity that accompanied the category 4 Hurricane Beryl.

He was addressing a press conference on Monday afternoon with Energy Minister Daryl Vaz.
