JTA concerned about chair of the Teachers’ Service Commission

The recent appointment of Alphansus Davis as Chairman of the Teachers’ Service Commission is not going down well with the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA).

The teacher's union broke its silence on Tuesday; nearly a week after the announcement was made at Jamaica House.

Last Friday, Opposition spokesman on Education, Basil Waite called for the revocation of Mr. Davis' appointment stating that there is a glaring conflict of interest.

And Tuesday afternoon, the Nadine Molloy-Young-headed JTA said it will be seeking to have further dialogue with Education Minister, Andrew Holness on the issue.

The JTA says while it takes no issue with the appointment of Mr. Davis, as Chairman of the Teachers’ Service Commission, it has a problem with the senior advisor being named to chair the Commission.

The association claims this is fraught with danger as there is an inherent conflict between the two positions.

The JTA reasons that the Teachers’ Service Commission is structured to comprise representation of religious bodies and trusts which own and operate educational institutions where the JTA is also represented.

The JTA further argues that the public will find it very difficult to separate the position of senior advisor from that of chairman of the Teachers’ Service Commission.
