Justice Minister Delroy Chuck and NIA Principal Director, Professor Trevor Munroe
Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has challenged some of the conclusions drawn by Principal Director of National Integrity Action, Professor Trevor Munroe, over Jamaica's ranking in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2020.
Jamaica moved up from a score of 43 out of 100 in 2019 to 44.
Zero is deemed very corrupt.
Professor Munroe said one of the reasons Jamaica improved so little was the reduction of Opposition's role in oversight committees as this raises governance issues.
Mr. Chuck disagrees with this conclusion, arguing the government made the decision because committees were not functioning.
More areas for improvement despite CPI ranking
Professor Munroe says while despite the improved ranking, there are several areas to improve.
"There's nothing to celebrate here. We have been in this failure mode for too long and now is the time for us to really resolve, 'look the chronic difficulties that have kept us here for so many decades is not what we are going to allow to continue'," he said.
The country's CPI score of 44 led to an improved ranking of 69 out of 180 countries.
Jamaica was ranked 74th in 2019.
