Kingfish merger

Speaking at a press conference Friday afternoon Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin announced that Operation Kingfish is set to merge with the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) as part of sweeping changes being instituted in the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Operation Kingfish, a multi-national task force between the Jamaican government, the US, United Kingdom and Canada celebrated three years in operation in 2007.

The espionage section of the Constabulary Force, known as Special Branch is to be scrapped and the resources from the unit sent to new NIB/Kingfish.

"The new arrangement will see the (NIB) and Kingfish combined under one command. The NIB/Kingfish, which is the new formation, will be strengthened from the appropriate elements of the Special Branch, which will no longer exist. We retained Kingfish, because Kingfish (is) a brand name and it means something to everybody who hears the name. So it will be NIB/Kingsfish," he said.

Commissioner Lewin told journalists that the anti-corruption arm, the Professional Standards Branch, will no longer exist and will be replaced by a new unit, the Inspectorate of Constabulary.

He disclosed that Protective Services will be revamped and equipped with specialised equipment and will also be staffed with persons with specialised training in providing protection to government officials and dignitaries.

"The manner in which people previously got into the protective division, where personal preferences and untrained persons find themselves in the protective division, will no longer occur. As far as I'm concerned, the Protective Division is one of those areas of the force which should be an elite area, one that every policeman should (aspire) to get into. We're going to professionalize it so that it is equipped and properly fit for its role," said Commissioner Lewin.

The Community Relations Division is to be scrapped and placed under the Public Safety Unit.
