Chief Public Health Inspector for Kingston & St Andrew Grayson Hutchinson has served notice that several markets in the Corporate Area will be closed if they are not upgraded to meet health and sanitation standards.
Mr Hutchinson, addressing last week's meeting of the Clean City Committee of the Kingston & St. Andrew Municipal Corporation [KSAMC], said following inspections of the markets last year, recommendations were made for these facilities to be closed.
But he said he thought it was reasonable to grant the KSAMC additional time to carry out improvement works.
After the new Mayor of Kingston, Andrew Swaby, asked for more time to upgrade seven markets, and improve their overall condition, Mr Hutchinson agreed to put on hold the interventions he was contemplating.
