The Urology Unit at Kingston Public Hospital has received a laser lithotripter, which it will be better able to better treat patients with kidney stone disease.
The advanced surgical tool was donated to the KPH by Art of Surgery and the Ameena Gafoor Foundation.
The 10 million dollar lithotripter allows urologists to more efficiently and safely treat patients with kidney stone disease using minimally invasive means, without the need for an open incision.
Dr. Reaud Gafoor, Chief of Urology at Art of Surgery says this means surgeries can be performed in less time in Jamaica's largest Urology Service.
Dr Gafoor says this will help to decrease suffering and limit the long waiting lists now being experienced by those suffering from the disease.
Urinary stone disease affects one in 10 people in their lifetime.
It is associated with debilitating pain, potential for blockage and loss of kidneys, and life-threatening infections.
